Brand new ghost stories announced

The Ordeals of Sherlock Holmes

A major new project is annouced from Big Finish Productions! "The Ordeals of Sherlock Holmes" is a box-set of four, full-cast audio dramas - a quartet of stories, set at different points in the career of Sherlock Holmes, which build up into a much bigger narrative. Jonathan has written the scripts which have been brought to life by a wonderful cast, including the brilliant Nicholas Briggs and Richard Earl as Holmes and Watson. Athens International Creative Writing Summer School

Jonathan is delighted to be a part of the Athens International Creative Writing Summer School 2013! Based in Athens and organised by Kingston University and the British Council, it runs from 17th June - 13th July. This is a rare chance to work with such acclaimed writers as Rachel Cusk, Fiona Sampson, James Miller, Adam Baron, Paul Perry and Jane Yeh. Jonathan will be in Athens, teaching for the last weeks, from 1st - 13th July.

Joe Wright's Trelawny of the Wells

In this week's edition of the Times Literary Supplement (March 8th 2013), Jonathan has contributed a review of Joe Wright's new production of Arthur Wing Pinero's 1898 play Trelawny of the Wells, currently playing at the Donmar Theatre in London.

Doctor Who: Persuasion

Jonathan has written a four-part Doctor Who story starring Sylvester McCoy. Called Persuasion, it's a full-cast audio drama and will be released by Big Finish Productions in July. New reviews!

Jonathan has recently contributed two new reviews to the Times Literary Supplement - an article on the reissue of (early twentieth century detective writer and Titanic victim) Jacques Futrelle's The Chase of the Golden Plate and a piece on the late Ferenc Morton Szasz's Atomic Comics. Doctor Who!

Jonathan has contributed to a forthcoming Doctor Who audio story, 1001 Nights, starring Peter Davison who played the Doctor on television from 1982 to 1984. Produced by Big Finish, the four-episode release features a quartet of separate, self-contained tales which build into a larger narrative. Jonathan has written the story in the second episode. Other stories are by Catherine Harvey and by the team of Emma Beeby and Gordon Rennie (who also devised the larger narrative). Sebastian Faulks reviewed!

In September's edition of the Literary Review, Jonathan reviews Sebastian Faulks' new novel, A Possible Life. He writes: "this quintet of stories does not cohere in a way that feels polyphonic or even truly novelistic... in the manner of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas (to which A Possible Life sometimes appears a more timid successor)". The magazine is available now.

Batman reviewed!

In this week's Times Literary Supplement (edition of August 17 and 24), Jonathan reviews Will Brooker's intriguing new study of Batman in the twenty-first century, Hunting the Dark Knight.

Five first novels reviewed!

In this month's edition of the Literary Review, Jonathan reviews five new novels - Ros Barber's The Marlowe Papers, Sam Thompson's (Booker-longlisted) Communion Town, Ben Lerner's Leaving the Atocha Station, Liza Klaussmann's Tigers in Red Weather and Charlotte Rogan's The Lifeboat. The magazine is available from all good newsagents now.

W Sydney Robinson's "Muckraker"!


In this week's Times Literary Supplement (edition of July 13th, 2012) Jonathan has reviewed Muckraker, W Sydney Robinson's new biography of the Victorian newspaperman (and Titanic victim) W T Stead. Jonathan concludes that "Stead's was a splendidly rackety Victorian life, full of secrets and piety, dangerous enthusiasms and heroic miscalculations, to which Robinson does entire justice".

One-day creative writing workshop!

Jonathan is running a one-day creative writing workshop at East Surrey College on Thursday 12th July from 10am to 4pm. There will be exercises and games and the emphasis will be on finding fun ways to start (or restart) your writing. The college is based near Redhill in Surrey. Masterclasses at the City Lit!

Jonathan will be teaching two classes in Creative Writing at London's City Lit this spring and summer.

How to write short fiction
is a ten week course in writing short fiction and runs from April to June.

Exploring creativity: from words to stories
is a one-day course in June which aims to kick-start the creative imagination through the use of games and writing exercises.
Based in central London, the classes will be welcoming and fun.
